What a kundli actually shows
A kundli is a map of where the planets stood, from your birthplace, at the moment you were born. The ascendant or lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at that instant, and it changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters more than birth date for anything beyond a sun sign.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, rather than the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so your Vedic sun sign is usually the one before your Western one. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian government's calendar reform committee.
