How the 36 points are counted

Ashtakoot means eight limbs, and the score is built from eight separate tests, each weighted differently. Varna carries one point, vashya two, tara three, yoni four, graha maitri five, gana six, bhakoot seven and nadi eight. Every one of them is computed from the two Moons alone, which is why matching needs only a birth Moon on each side rather than two complete charts.

Convention reads eighteen and above as workable, and most families look for twenty-one or more. But the raw total hides the thing that matters most: nadi alone is worth eight points, so two charts can score respectably while carrying the mismatch the tradition takes most seriously. That is why nadi and bhakoot dosha are called out separately here rather than buried in the arithmetic.

The classical texts also list cancellations for both doshas, and those cancellations are not computed on this page. Nor is mangal dosha compared between the two charts, which is a separate test entirely. Guna milan is one input to a decision that belongs to the people making it, not a verdict.
