What mangal dosha is, and is not

Mangal dosha, also called kuja dosha or being manglik, is counted when Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. Traditions differ on the reference point, so we report the count from both the ascendant and the Moon rather than picking one and hiding the other.

It is worth holding this lightly. By the arithmetic alone, a large share of all charts carry mangal dosha from one reference point or the other, and the classical texts list numerous cancellations that remove it: Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Mars aspected by Jupiter, both partners carrying the dosha, and more.

What Mars genuinely describes is heat, drive and friction. Read as a temperament to handle rather than a defect to fear, it is useful. Read as a verdict on whether someone may marry, it has caused a great deal of unnecessary distress.
